Installing Fedora on a HP Z840 with M2 Drive
I’ve run into a problem installing Fedora after Windows 11 for a Dual-Boot environment on my HP Z840 Workstation. Although Fedora recognised other drives on the system, my Windows drive and its remaining space did not show up. This was a Samsung EVO 970 drive I had left about half un-allocated for the Linux installation. Neither GRUB nor the Fedora live system saw the partitions. Turns out that this is caused by a BIOS setting: there’s a default device setting for the SATA controller that’s set to RAID (under Advanced...

read moreHow to reset the BIOS on a HP Z840 Workstation
I’ve had some spurious issues with my HP Z840 workstation recently. After transferring my data drives to a new system, the old system wouldn’t boot anymore. All fans and lights would come on, but no BIOS messages would display and the screen was dead. There were no diagnostics beeps either, which at first lead me to believe the system had completely died (just in time for my new system to be back up and running mind you – so it hasn’t let me down). Turns out a complete BIOS reset brought my Z840 back to life, yet every...

read moreHow to test your System RAM in Windows
I’ve added some new RAM to my desktop system, and before embarking on mission critical projects I thought it best to test if it was working correctly. On previous occasions I’ve always relied on the built-in BIOS tool, but I felt in the mood for something new and researched if there was a built-in tool in Windows 10. Turns out there is, and here’s how we can use it. Starting the Memory Test We can find the Memory Diagnostics Tool by searching for mdsched We get an option to restart Windows now and perform the test, or test...
read moreAirPods vs AirPods Pro – which ones are better?
I’ve been splashing out on AirPods a few months ago, when Julia and I both bought the AirPods Pro 2nd Generation. The ongoing building work around us isn’t something I enjoy while I work. I also had a pair of old AirPods 1st generation that I wanted to have repaired, but it was cheaper to buy a new pair of AirPods 2nd generations instead, so I did that. Hence, I’ve been using both side by side and can give you an impression on both, with the various differences they offer. If you’re on the fence of which ones to buy,...

There’s a helpful that displays your screenshots under View – Screenshots. This will open the Screenshots Manager. You can find this when you’re not in Big Picture mode. From here you can upload your work to Steam, set its visibility and give it a caption. You can also filter by game in the drop-down that says “most recent”. There are two interesting options to note here: the folder icon will give you the location on disk to this screenshot the gear icon takes you to Screenshot Settings in Preferences The latter...
read moreFixed: macOS can’t send images in Messages
I had an issue on my Mac Mini (with macOS 10.15 Catalina) in that it didn’t want to send images in the Messages app anymore. Texts could through fine, but every time I added an image, it tried to send it for several minutes and always aborted with a “can’t deliver” error. Subsequent attempts to re-send also failed. This happened just around the time when Apple switched off Photostream, but thankfully this was not related. The solution was to delete the Messages database and start with a clean slate. Here’s how I...
read moreFixed: macOS Remote Login hangs on “starting”
Had a weird issue on my MacMini, with macOS 10.15.7 Catalina. I wanted to enable remote login on the machine, which I know for a fact was once working. Today however, all I got was this: After enabling it for one or multiple users, the SSH service appears to try to start, but never gets going so remote logins aren’t possible. Turns out this “feature” has been introduced after the latest security patches from what I understand, and it being a legacy OS, it’ll likely never see a fix. Thankfully there is a temporary fix...
read moreHow to summon an open app onto the current monitor in Windows
When I’m in my streaming studio, I don’t see my second monitor. Apps tend to remember where they last opened, so I’m faced with the problem that some content appears on the second monitor, but I can’t easily drag it over to my main monitor. I was wondering if there was a way to bring it over with a keyboard shortcut, and alas there is: by way of pressing Windows + Cursor Keys. Here’s how it works: summon the task bar and click the app/window in question (this brings it into focus) now press Windows/Start +...
