Changing all Folder Icons in KDE Plasma (Fedora)

Posted by on 8:31 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on Changing all Folder Icons in KDE Plasma (Fedora)

I had a weird thing happen today: all folder icons had changed themselves, after I tried to apply a different icon to a single folder only using Dolphin in KDE. Probably a bug that’s long been fixed. The trouble was I had no idea how to alleviate this problem, so I did some digging and found out. In System Settings, search for File Associations. Navigate to inode, then directory. A familiar window pops up, similar to what we have in Dolphin. Click the folder icon and pick a better one. The default is the blue one (called...

FIXED: Why some Windows games refuse to be installed in Steam on Linux

Posted by on 2:16 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on FIXED: Why some Windows games refuse to be installed in Steam on Linux

Most if not all Windows games have an install option on my Steam Deck, but when trying to install the same games on my Fedora workstation, Steam says the game is only available for Windows and cannot be installed. What gives? Turns out there’s a setting that will make this option available, but it’s disabled by default. The reasoning is that verified games will show up as installable, but those that may very well work with Proton but are not yet verified will not install. Let me show you where that setting is. in Steam, head over...

FIXED: Steam won’t launch on Fedora 42

Posted by on 2:16 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on FIXED: Steam won’t launch on Fedora 42

After updating Fedora from 41 to 42, I’ve noticed that the Steam version from the Fedora repo no longer wanted to start. I could launch the Flatpak version, but it doesn’t have native Proton support so wouldn’t launch my games. Thankfully there’s an easy fix to make Fedora Steam work again with this simple fix: edit the launch icon under Environment Variables, enter __GL_CONSTANT_FRAME_RATE_HINT=3 That’s it! Apparently this can also be done on the command line (I’m not sure if it needs to happen before...

Why won’t Fedora shut down? Let’s find out!

Posted by on 4:23 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on Why won’t Fedora shut down? Let’s find out!

I’ve had this on numerous occasions: I’m asking Fedora to shut down, and it either takes a while for it to obey my command, or it outright refuses. Most UIs aren’t exactly forthcoming about the reasons, by the command line interface has today told me that there’s a way to find out what might be blocking it. The answer is the systemd-inhibit When typed with no parameters, it gave me a list like this: Here we can see that no less than 4 processes need to do some work before the shutdown command can be honoured, with the...

How to play Ratatouille with a PS4 or PS5 Controller on Windows 11

Posted by on 1:24 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on How to play Ratatouille with a PS4 or PS5 Controller on Windows 11

I’ve just picked up a brand new copy of Ratatouille for Windows from eBay, and it’s just as nice as I remember it from back in the day on the GameCube (unlike the disappointment that is the PS3 “HD” version, which happens to be a completely different game of the same title). Thankfully the game still works on Windows 11, thanks to the RatataR patch you can find on GitHub. I wanted to play the game with my PS4 Dualshock and PS5 Dualsense controllers, but they’re not natively supported so I had to use my favourite...

How to remove the image in Windows 11 Search Bar

Posted by on 2:18 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on How to remove the image in Windows 11 Search Bar

Even when you turn things off, Microsoft has a habit of turning this back ON again for you. Case in point: that picture in my search bar that’s been disabled since May 2022 has just re-appeared. Back then I ran Windows 10, today I run Windows 11 and here’s how we remove it: in Settings, find Privacy and Security scroll down to More in Show Search Highlights, disable the toggle Voila! Sanity has been (partially) re-instated.

How to run Unreal Engine 5.x on Fedora (without compilation)

Posted by on 12:28 am in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on How to run Unreal Engine 5.x on Fedora (without compilation)

Since Unreal Engine 5.0, EPIC have been providing pre-compiled binaries that can be run on most common Linux installations, including Ubuntu, Fedora and CentOS. I’ve tried it out on a brand new Fedora 40 system and it worked great, without having spend an additional hour waiting for the compiler to do its thing. So yay! However, it being a “Linux thing” and all, the process was quite from intuitive. In case either of us ever have to do this again, here’s how it worked for me. For reference, I’ve used my backup...

Removing Launch Pad when pressing the PS button on macOS Ventura

Posted by on 4:42 am in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on Removing Launch Pad when pressing the PS button on macOS Ventura

I hooked up my PS5 controller to my Mac Studio on previous occasions, but never noticed how the Launch Pad comes up in a Games folder, so that we can launch stand-alone apps without the need for a mouse and keyboard. While helpful in principle, I prefer to use the Steam client to bring up its own menu, as it does on the Steam Deck. Naturally Apple have REMOVED the option to make this selectable since macOS 13 Ventura because… nobody knows. Thankfully there’s still a way to remove this feature with the following terminal command....

How to rescue Melissa from Room 218 in Hotel Dusk: The Electrical Switch Puzzle

Posted by on 3:22 pm in Knowledge Base | Comments Off on How to rescue Melissa from Room 218 in Hotel Dusk: The Electrical Switch Puzzle

I had great trouble solving the Electrical Switch puzzle in Hotel Dusk: Room 215 on the DS 44670 Emulator. The puzzle requires us to flick two switches up at the same time to restore electricity to the room Melisa is hiding in. Sadly the Nintendo DS was never multi touch capable, but this puzzle seemingly requires this. Not going to happen, let alone on an emulator. What’s worse is that trying something will lead either Kyle or Louie to speak a multi-line message, which means we can’t just try again without waiting for 10 seconds....
